Wow Liam! So glad we are finally getting to 'see where you are'! (Thanks Megan - good job!) Beautiful place. By all the sand it seems pretty obvious that you are on the edge of the desert. You seem to be making your way around wonderfully well now.
The kids in the school next door are very fortunate to have you there. You are a really patient guy with a good sense of humour, so I know they will love you. Today is Mother's Day, so we will be visiting Grandma, and Erika is here to visit me too. She brought me a fantastic bouquet of flowers and a cool pair of earrings.
The swallows are busy building their nest in the birdhouse by my diningroom window, and at least one person I know has seen her first hummingbird of the season. It is getting wonderfully green here; the cherry trees are in bloom, and a few apple varieties are blooming already too. Pretty early this year.
Amazing that you can cook scrambled eggs using a gas hotplate, a pan without non-stick coating and no butter! Am wondering if you took that cool bug-netting thing with you. Are the bugs huge there? Speaking of bugs: what things are the best there, and what things bug you the most (other than the cold showers). Also wondering what game is being played in the pictures. Are people very curious about you, or are they so used to tourists that they pay no attention? My limited experience with people from parts of Africa is that they are both more formal than we are here and more welcoming. Are you also finding that to be the case?
Keep writing lots - we are very interested in your journey and want to hear all the details, even teensy every-day stuff!
Love you lots. Consider yourself hugged.

I brought the bug netting, but everwhere I've been already has it setup around the beds, so I havn't had to use mine.
For sure the Bread is the best! It has so much flavor, unfortunately it doesn't keep overnight, so you have to eat it up quickly.
Probably the most annoying thing are the kids I see when I'm out. They seem to instictively start calling "TOOBAB" over and over and over, until they can't see you any more. And occasionally random people approach me and ask to be my friend. They usually want my address, so I give them an email address...I havn't yet had anyone ask me to take them back to Canada, but it could very likely happen.
The game is Football (Soccor), they play on fields of sand!... it flys everywhere when they kick they ball.
As far as formailty, not really. They are very welcoming, and greetings are the most important. It is very offensive not to greet someone, and shake their hand, before diving into things.

Wow Liam; thanks for the education!
We know so little about other cultures! What do the kids mean by 'TooBab'? Hey Liam, Megan is going to stay at my house while I'm gone and I think she's really excited about it...I was beginning to worry that she might change her mind so I'm so happy! Consider yourself hugged by me too and keep educating us! Aunt Monica :)

Hi Scoop! The pictures are great - Aunt Ann is right, you can tell the Gambia is on the edge of the Sahara. Very cool. Well, very warm. Thanks so much for the email card - I felt very loved today! Megan gave me a beautiful basket filled with several plants. It's gorgeous. I'm a lucky Mom.

Hi again Liam - what are the buildings in the pictures? There's one that looks like a door, with green hedge-type things in the foreground, and another of a small building.
